4 Natural Ways to Ease Headaches

From pulsating pain to a dull aching sensation, headaches can be a frustrating and debilitating experience, disrupting our daily lives and productivity. While over-the-counter medications are readily available, many people prefer to explore natural remedies first. Here are 6 drug-free methods that may help alleviate headache pain:

Hydration

I know this sounds really basic, but dehydration is a common trigger for headaches. Ensuring you drink enough water throughout the day is the first thing to consider in prevention and alleviation of headache symptoms. Aim for at least 1/2 oz of water per pound of body weight daily, and increase your intake during hot weather or physical activity. Herbal teas and water-rich fruits like watermelon can also contribute to your hydration goals. Beverages with caffeine and alcohol dehydrate you; you need to drink 2 glasses of water for every glass of caffeine or alcohol to remain “hydration neutral”.

Supplements

Vitamin B2, magnesium bisglycinate and CoQ10 in combination have been shown clinically to have a positive effect on headaches and migraines. Ask your chiropractor for the correct dosage of each to get started. Speaking from experience, this supplement combination is definitely worth trying!

Essential Oils

Certain essential oils have pain-relieving and relaxing properties that may help ease headaches. Peppermint oil, when applied to the temples and forehead, creates a cooling sensation that may reduce tension headaches. Lavender oil, known for its calming effects, can be inhaled or applied topically to promote relaxation and potentially relieve migraine pain.

Acupressure

This ancient Chinese healing method involves applying pressure to specific points on the body to relieve pain and tension. For headaches, try pressing the pressure point LI-4, located in the webbing between your thumb and index finger, for a few minutes. Another effective point is GB20, found at the base of your skull on both sides of your neck. Traditional Chinese acupuncture can be wonderful for headaches as well.

Relaxation Techniques

Stress and tension are major contributors to headaches. Incorporating relaxation techniques into your daily routine may help prevent and manage headache pain. Deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and meditation are all helpful methods. Even taking a few minutes to practice mindfulness can make a significant difference in reducing headache frequency and intensity.

Chiropractic and Posture Exercises

Most of the headaches and migraines people in my clinic suffer from are the direct result of structural changes in the spine in combination with poor posture. We should always look for the root cause of pain and use supplements, oils etc. as adjunctive therapies.
